We don’t give our properties star ratings, as we believe this is a very personal choice. What one person sees as “luxury” might mean something completely different to someone else. Instead, we’ve grouped our incredible safari properties into four categories:

Adventure, Quintessential, Indulgence, and Exclusive.

Only you can decide what level of comfort and experience feels right for you. We’re simply here to help guide you in the right direction and make sure your safari is everything you’ve dreamed of.

The easiest way to understand the categories

Adventure → authentic, remote, simpler, more rugged
Quintessential → classic safari + very good comfort
Indulgence → high-end luxury and lots of special touches
Exclusive → private-use accommodation and highly personalised experience

Think:

Adventure: “I want to feel like I’m on safari.”
Quintessential: “I want a beautiful, comfortable safari camp.”
Indulgence: “I want a beautiful luxury camp, without losing the feeling that I’m in Africa.”
Exclusive: "I want a totally private safari experience with just me, my friends & family"

If you’re choosing accommodation for a multi-camp safari, we'd recommend mixing the categories rather than make everything Indulgence; the contrast between a rustic Adventure camp and a spectacular Indulgence lodge can make the whole trip much more memorable.

Our Adventure Camps explained:

Mopani’s Adventure Camps are noticeably more wild, rustic and immersive than their Quintessential collection. Mopani describes them as “Authentic • Remote • Immersive” and says they’re aimed at travellers wanting a “wilder safari” and a genuine back-to-nature experience.

What they’re like

More remote: Many are in less-visited wilderness areas, where the emphasis is on getting away from other tourists and being immersed in the landscape.
More rustic: You may have bucket showers, traditional bush facilities and simpler accommodation rather than polished bathrooms and resort-style amenities.
Still comfortable: “Adventure” doesn’t mean camping rough. Mopani specifically says comfort is not compromised - the difference is that you’re accepting fewer frills and a more natural, sometimes basic setup.
More experiential: Walking, tracking, remote game drives, canoeing, riding or mobile safaris feature more prominently depending on the camp and destination.
Atmosphere: Think canvas tents, lanterns, campfires, bush sounds, outdoor showers and being much closer to nature. There can be a wonderful old-school safari feeling.
Small and intimate: A lot of the camps are relatively small, which can make the experience feel personal rather than like staying at a lodge.

What does Quintessential mean?

Mopani Safaris uses “Quintessential” as its middle-ground safari category: not basic or rough-and-ready, but also not ultra-luxury. We view these properties as classic safari camps and lodges combining comfort, style, relaxation and memorable wildlife encounters.

What that means in practice

Think authentic African safari with a comfortable, stylish base, rather than a five-star resort.

Accommodation: Usually attractive tented camps, bush lodges or small safari properties, often with en-suite bathrooms, comfortable beds, private verandas/decks and good communal areas. Some are quite luxurious in feel, while retaining a strong connection to the bush.
Atmosphere: Intimate, relaxed and distinctly safari rather than resort-like. Expect canvas, natural materials, firepits, open-air spaces, views over wilderness and plenty of time outdoors.
Wildlife comes first: The camps are generally selected for their settings and access to excellent game viewing, walking or other wilderness experiences. We emphasise good guiding and a genuine connection with nature.
Comfort: You should expect a proper, comfortable stay, good food and attentive hospitality, but not necessarily things such as elaborate spas, enormous suites or the very highest level of personalised service found in their Indulgence category.
Character over uniformity: The collection is quite varied. For example, our Quintessential list includes properties in the Okavango and Chobe in Botswana, the Masai Mara and Samburu in Kenya, Namibia, South Africa and elsewhere.

So if you’re looking for a safari that feels genuinely wild and atmospheric, but where you still want a lovely bed, en-suite bathroom, good meals, attractive surroundings and a comfortable place to relax between game drives, Quintessential is probably the category I’d look at first.

Is Indulgence the Ultimate?

Yes - Indulgence is Mopani’s step up into genuinely luxury safari, but importantly it still tends to retain the atmosphere and intimacy of a proper bush camp rather than feeling like a conventional five-star hotel.

The common thread is more space, more privacy, higher-end accommodation, stronger service and more facilities, while keeping you immersed in the wilderness. For example, Lake Manyara Tree Lodge has just nine stilted suites in the forest, with private decks and a very secluded, romantic feel.

What Indulgence feels like

Beautiful, spacious accommodation: often large safari tents, suites or private villas, with proper en-suite bathrooms, excellent beds, private decks and lovely views.
More polished interiors: think quality linens, stylish furniture, good lighting, beautiful fabrics and thoughtful design rather than deliberately rustic safari furnishings.
Better facilities: swimming pools are common, and you’re more likely to find spas, Wi-Fi, private dining areas and other creature comforts.
Higher level of service: more attentive and personalised than the Adventure or Quintessential categories.
Excellent food and drinks: meals tend to be a more significant part of the experience, with good wine and more elaborate dining.
Privacy and romance: many of these properties are particularly suited to couples, honeymoons and special occasions.
Still genuinely wild: the luxury isn’t intended to isolate you from the bush. At Lake Manyara Tree Lodge, for example, elephants can wander around the decks, while the lodge itself is deep in the forest.

One interesting thing is that Indulgence doesn’t necessarily mean less adventurous. A property can be extremely luxurious while still offering excellent walking, night drives, boating or remote wilderness experiences.

And there are some very different interpretations of “Indulgence.” Changa Safari Camp on Lake Kariba, for instance, has luxury tents, a pool overlooking the lake and spa treatments, while still being an intimate bush camp rather than a resort.

Is Exclusive suitable for my group?

Exclusive is a different concept from simply being “more luxurious.” Mopani’s Exclusive properties are primarily about having the entire camp, lodge or private house to yourselves, with a dedicated team and a safari experience built around your group. We describe the category as “Private • Bespoke • Individual.”

What an Exclusive property feels like

Private-use accommodation - rather than sharing the camp with other guests.
Your own staff and guide, with service tailored around your group.
Your own safari vehicle, so you aren’t negotiating with other guests about when to leave, where to go or how long to stay at a sighting.
Flexible days - linger with elephants, spend longer with a leopard, have a leisurely breakfast, or head out early for a particular activity.
Very intimate - particularly good for a family, group of friends, honeymoon or milestone trip.
A strong sense of having your own African house/camp, rather than staying at a hotel.

The important distinction is that Exclusive does not automatically mean the most luxurious accommodation in our portfolio. The defining feature is exclusivity and personalisation, whereas Indulgence is primarily about the level of luxury, comfort and service.

There is quite a range of Exclusive properties. For example, Daka Expeditions Camp in Hwange is deliberately an intimate, under-canvas safari experience for just 2–6 guests, reserved exclusively for one booking, with its own vehicle and professional guide. That’s Exclusive in a very classic, adventurous safari sense rather than a glossy luxury-resort sense. At the other end, Lamai Private Lodge in the Serengeti is much more of a private luxury bush house: a private base for families or friends, with a pool, spacious decks and private guides/vehicles.

The really interesting option is combining Indulgence + Exclusive qualities: a private-use property that is also extremely luxurious. But if you’re travelling as a couple rather than a family/group, we wouldn’t automatically recommend Exclusive; you’re potentially paying a substantial premium for privacy that you may not need.
