Osonjoi Lodge
Set on the less-crowded Eastern side of The Ngorongoro Crater, Osonjoi Lodge gives unrivalled access to this incredible wonder of Africa set in beautiful and sumptuous surroundings.
Osonjoi Lodge is a refined safari retreat set within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, offering an exceptional base from which to explore one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife destinations.
Located near the iconic Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, the lodge provides access to an ecosystem renowned for its density and diversity of wildlife. Its position close to Lemala Gate allows for a gradual descent into the crater, with game viewing often beginning along the way.
Set in the quieter eastern quadrant of the crater, the lodge enjoys fewer visitors during the most rewarding times of day. Early morning and late afternoon game drives offer prime opportunities to witness wildlife at its most active, with guests able to reach the crater floor within 10 to 15 minutes, ideal for photographers seeking the best natural light. Escorted walks along the crater rim and into the surrounding forest, led by Maasai guides and armed rangers, provide a more immersive experience of the landscape.
Easily accessible by road from Arusha or Lake Manyara National Park, or by air via Manyara Airstrip, the lodge is perched on a hill just back from the crater rim. Its name, “Osonjoi,” is inspired by native trees valued by the Maasai for their symbolic and medicinal significance, reflecting a deep connection to the land and local culture.
The suites are among the most spacious in the area, featuring king size beds, en suite bathrooms, and large picture windows overlooking the surrounding highland forest. Designed for comfort in the cooler crater climate, each suite includes thoughtful touches such as wood burning stoves, warm duvets, and hot water bottles to ensure a cozy stay. A separate spa suite, nestled among the trees, offers a tranquil setting for relaxation and wellness treatments delivered by skilled therapists.
