GweGwe Beach Lodge

Tucked into the heart of South Africa’s wild and remote Wild Coast, GweGwe Beach Lodge offers a rare combination of untouched nature, beautiful beaches and understated luxury. Set within the spectacular Mkambati Nature Reserve, the lodge opened in 2024 on a site once occupied by rustic rondavels, thoughtfully transformed into an elegant retreat that remains deeply connected to its surroundings.

The lodge has just nine spacious en-suite suites, including seven twin deluxe suites and two family suites. Each has a freestanding bath, indoor and outdoor showers, fireplace, lounge area and private garden, along with a sea-facing deck and six-metre private pool overlooking the Indian Ocean. Interiors draw inspiration from the culture and craftsmanship of the Pondoland region, combining natural materials and local influences with contemporary comfort.

Mkambati is a remarkable biodiversity hotspot, with sweeping grasslands, indigenous vegetation, waterfalls and river valleys supporting an impressive variety of wildlife. Zebra, eland, kudu and red hartebeest can be encountered across the reserve, while birdlife includes grey crowned cranes, southern ground-hornbills, Cape vultures and swamp nightjars. The cliffs of the Msikaba River are also home to one of the last remaining Cape vulture colonies in the Eastern Cape.

The wilderness continues beyond the beach, with the adjacent Pondoland Marine Protected Area protecting a rich coastal ecosystem. Dolphins and abundant marine life can be seen throughout the year, while humpback whales pass along the coast during their annual migration. The region is also at the heart of the extraordinary sardine run, one of the world’s great marine wildlife spectacles.

Conservation is central to the experience, with Mkambati protecting an important landscape within the globally significant Maputaland-Pondoland biodiversity hotspot. Rivers rise within the reserve before flowing through lush valleys and over waterfalls towards the ocean, while rare plant species such as the endemic Mkambati palm highlight the importance of this protected wilderness.
