Nestled deep within the pristine wilderness of North Luangwa National Park, Mwaleshi Camp sits hidden among mopane forest on a scenic bend of the Mwaleshi River. With just four thatched chalets rebuilt annually from natural materials, the camp blends seamlessly into its surroundings. Each chalet offers uninterrupted river views and ensuite bathrooms open to the stars, creating a truly immersive wilderness experience.
With very few roads in this remote area, most activities are done on foot, following animal trails through unspoiled savannah. Morning walks begin early to avoid the heat and are led by an experienced guide and armed National Parks scout. The pace is tailored to guests’ abilities, with drinking water provided and a welcome tea and light snack enjoyed during a mid walk break. Guests return to camp by mid morning to relax, swim in the river, and enjoy lunch. Afternoon walks are shorter and return before dusk. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as paths can be uneven.
Mwaleshi lies within the parks rhino sanctuary and is one of the only places in Zambia where you may see a wild black rhino, successfully reintroduced in 2003. Elephant, puku, impala and Cooksons wildebeest are often seen along the river, along with spotted hyenas, wild dogs and lion.
Birders can enjoy up to 416 species, including the Chestnut-mantled Sparrow-Weaver, Yellow-throated Longclaw and White-winged Starling.

Takwela Camp
Takwela Camp opened in July 2019 in North Luangwa National Park. This remote and well managed park receives significant support from Frankfurt Zoological Society, alongside the dedicated teams of Zambia’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife and the North Luangwa Conservation Project.
Set on Remote Africa’s private land at the confluence of the Luangwa and Mwaleshi Rivers, Takwela enjoys sweeping views across a resident hippo pod and pristine bush on all sides. The camp accommodates a maximum of eight guests in four ensuite chalets, three with twin double beds and one with a king bed. In keeping with the Remote Africa ethos, the camp is solar powered and built primarily from local natural materials using local skills.
Access is via a 30 minute scenic flight from Mwanya airstrip in South Luangwa to Mwaleshi airstrip, followed by a 45 minute game drive and short canoe crossing into camp. For strong walkers, a beautiful 10 kilometre morning walk along the Mwaleshi River connects Takwela with Mwaleshi Camp, making an excellent camp to camp experience. Stays of three nights or more at each camp are recommended.
Takwela offers a rare wilderness experience in an unexplored corner of the North Luangwa. While the floodplain is smaller than in the mid Luangwa, it remains prime wildlife country. Guests often share the park with only a handful of others. The park’s successful black rhino sanctuary and healthy populations of lion, hyena, elephant, buffalo, leopard, wildebeest and wild dog ensure exceptional wildlife encounters.
Note: Camps and safari activities take place in big game areas. While strict safety protocols are followed, there is always an inherent risk when encountering wild animals.
