Set in a perfect position on the banks of Sand River, Tengile River Lodge in Sabi Sands, South Africa has sweeping views from every vantage point and incredible opportunity for superb wildlife sightings.
Meaning “tranquil” in Tsonga, Tengile River Lodge lives up to its name, offering an exceptionally private safari experience in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. Set beneath the riverine canopy overlooking the Sand River, the lodge combines bold contemporary design with a strong connection to the surrounding wilderness.
Tengile shares 10,500 hectares of unfenced wilderness with the wider Sabi Sand, which borders Kruger National Park. The reserve is home to the Big Five and particularly renowned for exceptional leopard sightings. Expert guides and trackers lead intimate game drives, with strict vehicle limits helping to ensure respectful and rewarding wildlife encounters.
Just nine spacious suites are tucked into the bush, each designed to maximise privacy and views of the river. Air-conditioned and beautifully appointed, the suites feature elegant en-suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers, separate lounge and dining areas, private bars and expansive decks with sunken seating and private lap pools. Two suites can be connected, making them ideal for families travelling together.
The lodge’s communal spaces are equally impressive, with sweeping viewing decks, a relaxed library and beautifully crafted interiors featuring local art and hand-painted textiles. A wellness area offers massages and gym facilities, providing a peaceful retreat between safari activities.
Days can be spent on twice-daily game drives, including night drives, guided bush walks, birding and stargazing. Private and photographic safaris are also available, with photography lessons for guests of all abilities.
