Chikoko Tree Trails Camp
A wonderful remote walking trails camp set in the heart of South Luangwa, Chikoko offers an adventure in an area that is only accessible on foot.
Chikoko Trails is centred around the intimate and exclusive Chikoko Tree Camp, set on the west bank of South Luangwa National Park a few kilometres upstream from its parent camp Tafika. Accessible only on foot, the camp offers a rare opportunity to experience the African bush in its purest form. There are no roads and no vehicles, only the rhythm of walking and the quiet immersion of true wilderness.
Your journey begins with a canoe crossing of the Luangwa River before you continue on foot into a remote and untouched landscape. With a maximum of six guests per walk, each safari is personal, unhurried and deeply engaging.
Walking safaris reveal the bush in extraordinary detail. Without the distraction of vehicles, your senses sharpen. You notice the subtle fragrances carried on the air, the textures of bark and earth, the intricate movements of insects and birds. There is a profound sense of timelessness. The quiet thrill of standing downwind of an elephant and recognising its unmistakable scent is an experience that lingers long after you leave.
The area is renowned for exceptional wildlife sightings including eland, roan, kudu, elephant, giraffe, wild dog, lion, warthog, hippo and crocodile. In camp, guests can enjoy relaxed armchair viewing, particularly rewarding from September onwards.
Life at Chikoko Tree Camp is thoughtfully simple and authentic. All supplies are carried in by porters. Safari showers are open to the stars. A communal solar charging area and solar powered fans provide discreet comfort, while the absence of wifi preserves the spirit of remoteness. The camp is built using natural materials and local craftsmanship, reflecting a deep respect for the surrounding landscape.
Chikoko Trails occupies the first walking camp site in the Luangwa selected by Norman Carr and lies near David Livingstone’s historic river crossing at Perekani. Guided using traditional bush skills including natural fire making, this is a safari experience that is immersive, elemental and unforgettable.
