Karisia Walking Safaris

Karisia Walking Safaris offers a truly distinctive way to experience Kenya, combining walking and camel-supported safaris across the wild landscapes of Laikipia. Away from the confines of a vehicle, guests explore on foot, moving at a slower pace and becoming immersed in the sights, sounds and stories of the bush.

There are two ways to experience Karisia. Mobile Walking Safaris travel between remote camps, with camels carrying the equipment as guests walk through the wilderness. Alternatively, Base Camp Safaris are centred around Tumaren Camp, with days spent exploring on foot, by camel or by vehicle. Both offer a wonderfully personal and immersive safari experience, tailored around your interests.

Karisia’s experienced Maasai and Samburu guides bring an intimate knowledge of the landscape, wildlife and culture. Laikipia supports an exceptional diversity of wildlife, including elephants, big cats, Grevy’s zebra, African wild dogs and highland hartebeest. Walking also reveals a different side of the region, from dramatic Rift Valley landscapes to archaeological remains that offer a glimpse into thousands of years of human history.

Tumaren Camp sits within a private wildlife conservancy beside a natural salt lick that regularly attracts wildlife. Seven spacious en-suite tents offer hot showers, flush toilets and views across the plains, while a 20-metre swimming pool provides a welcome place to relax after a day in the bush. Family and group tents are also available.

Activities include guided walks, game drives, camel rides, rock climbing, bush picnics and visits to nearby communities. Conservation and community are also central to the Karisia experience, with support for local employment, wildlife monitoring, habitat management and education initiatives.
