Usangu Expedition Camp

Usangu Expedition Camp

Immersive conservation experience for the adventurous traveller, Usangu Expedition Camp is remote and authentic offering one of the finest safari experiences in Tanzania

Tucked beneath the shady canopy of miombo woodlands and just beyond the high-water mark, Usangu Expedition Camp offers an intimate, off-the-beaten-path safari experience with just six thoughtfully positioned tents. Each tent features a private veranda, en suite bathroom, hot-water shower, and battery-charging facilities, combining comfort with a minimalist, nature-immersive design.

Explore the pristine heart of the Usangu Wetlands, where conservation and tourism come together. Daytime activities include private game drives and guided walking safaris across dry floodplains and wooded terrain in search of big cats, elephant, giraffe, roan and sable antelope, and even African wild dogs. Birdwatchers will revel in sightings of hundreds of resident and migratory species, while amphibian enthusiasts might even encounter undocumented species.

Evenings at camp are a sensory delight—sunsets over the floodplains, delicious meals cooked over an open fire, and starlit dining that channels the spirit of classic safaris.

Located in the Ruaha-Rungwa ecosystem, Usangu is a vital part of Tanzania’s natural heritage. A visit here supports crucial conservation work, including ecosystem rehabilitation and community engagement. Learn more about this work at the Douglas Bell Information Centre, or through the passionate on-site team, many of whom are from surrounding villages.

Whether you're relaxing on your tent’s shaded deck, soaking in the sights and sounds of the wetlands, or out exploring, Usangu Expedition Camp offers an unforgettable stay—where your journey makes a difference.

Review

Why this Camp..?

(According to Google Reviews)

Usangu Expedition Camp reviews are overwhelmingly positive, with guests praising its remote wilderness experience, high-quality service, outstanding food, and engaging conservation activities. Visitors highlight the exceptional hospitality of the staff, the beautifully constructed tents and facilities, and the unique opportunity to participate in research activities like setting camera traps and identifying wildlife.

Key highlights from reviews:

  • Remote Wilderness & Wildlife Sightings:Guests consistently describe the camp as offering a true wilderness experience in a remote area of Ruaha National Park, with impressive wildlife sightings including large herds of elephants, sable, roan, topi, zebra, giraffe, eland, and even rarely seen animals like aardwolf and African wild cat through camera trap experiences.

  • Exceptional Hospitality & Service:The management and staff at Usangu Expedition Camp receive high praise for their friendliness, attentiveness, and genuine smiles, often cited as being among the best in Africa.

  • Outstanding Food & Dining:Meals are frequently described as outstanding, even considering the camp's remoteness, with options for communal dining around a campfire or surprise bush meals and brunches prepared with fresh ingredients.

  • Unique Conservation & Research Involvement:A major draw for many guests is the opportunity to engage with conservation efforts, such as setting up camera traps and assisting in identifying captured wildlife images at the on-site research station.

  • Comfortable & Well-Designed Accommodation:While offering a back-to-basics, wild experience, the camp's tents are described as spacious, comfortable, and well-designed, featuring private verandas and en-suite bathrooms.

Areas for Consideration:Some reviews mention that Wi-Fi is available in main areas but not in tents, emphasizing the camp's focus on disconnecting from technology and embracing the natural environment. It's also noted that the wildlife is still becoming accustomed to human presence, which is part of the "frontier" feel of the camp.
