Chada Katavi Camp

Chada Katavi Camp

A raw, remote safari deep in the heart of the wild west, Chada Katavi is about as remote as it gets with absolutely stunning vistas and wildlife viewing in Tanzania

Hidden under the shady canopy of acacia and tamarind trees, Chada Katavi sits at the edge of the wide Chada Plain, in the very heart of Katavi National Park, Western Tanzania’s last true frontier. This is one of the wildest and least-visited parks in the country – and that’s exactly why those in the know come here. It’s a place where you can truly disconnect and immerse yourself in Africa’s raw beauty, where wildlife outnumbers people and nature still calls the shots.

The camp is an authentic expedition-style outpost, with just six spacious safari tents blending into the surrounding bush. Each tent is designed to maximise light and airflow, with large shade net windows and en-suite bathrooms featuring traditional safari-style bucket showers and eco-flush toilets. Hot and cold water is available on demand, adding just enough comfort while keeping you close to nature.

Getting here is part of the adventure. Katavi lies over 500km from Arusha and is best accessed by shared charter flights every Monday and Thursday, connecting from Arusha (and the Serengeti at a supplement), with stops in Tabora and onward to Mahale. Flights return to Arusha by evening, and private charters can also be arranged across the region.

Game viewing here is exceptional. Vast herds of buffalo roam the plains, lions and leopards patrol the woodlands, and elephants move through camp, especially during the dry season. But it’s the dramatic scenes at the rivers and pools that make Katavi so unique. As water becomes scarce, hundreds of hippos crowd into the last remaining wallows, often engaging in loud, territorial battles. Crocodiles aestivate in caves along the riverbanks, lying in eerie stillness during the heat of the day. Add to that rare sightings of roan and sable antelope, massive crocs, and dense birdlife, and you’ve got a truly special wildlife haven.

Beyond traditional game drives, Chada Katavi is known for its epic walking safaris, offering a ground-level look at this dramatic landscape. You can also experience night drives, outstanding birding, and for the truly adventurous, a night of fly camping under the stars—a return to the roots of true bush exploration.

The best time to visit begins in June, when the park is green and lush after the rains. From July to October, the landscape begins to dry, and wildlife congregates around shrinking water sources, creating some of the most unforgettable sightings in Africa. Expect soaring daily temperatures and intense wildlife drama.

Children aged 12 and over are welcome at Chada Katavi, although walking safaris are reserved for those aged 16 and above due to the challenging nature of the terrain and the proximity to big game.

For those seeking an off-the-grid safari in a landscape that still feels truly untamed, Chada Katavi is a rare and rewarding destination—wild, remote, and utterly unforgettable.
