Amava River Lodge

Set on a sweeping bend of the Olifants River in the northern reaches of Balule Game Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger, Amava River Lodge enjoys an exceptional setting overlooking one of the region’s most beautiful waterways. From its elevated position on the southern riverbank, the intimate camp has uninterrupted views both upstream and downstream.

The river is central to the experience. Sandbanks and reedbeds attract abundant birdlife, while the surrounding grasses support large herds of elephant and buffalo. Hippos and crocodiles gather in the deeper pools, while the riverine forest provides habitat for predators including leopard and the elusive Pel’s fishing owl.

With just five private safari tents set within 5,000 hectares of wilderness and along eight kilometres of the Olifants River, Amava offers a wonderfully exclusive and uncrowded safari experience. Raised wooden walkways allow the camp to blend naturally into the riverbank, surrounded by towering trees and the sights and sounds of the bush.

Each tent has a spacious private deck overlooking the river, with insect-proof mesh creating an almost invisible boundary between guests and the wilderness. Natural wood and classic canvas are combined with contemporary touches, while comfortable twin or queen-size beds, private bathrooms with showers and hot and cold running water provide everything needed for a relaxed stay.

Days can be spent exploring Balule in search of the Greater Kruger’s abundant wildlife before returning to the peaceful riverside setting of camp.
