Shamwari Explorer Camp

Shamwari Explorer Camp

Shamwari Explorer Camp operates during the summer months of September to May and offers an incredible walking safari experience allowing you to get up close and personal with nature. It's rustic simplicity at its best.

During the South African summer season, Shamwari Private Game Reserve introduces its immersive Explorer Camp, offering guests a truly unique safari adventure. This once-in-a-lifetime experience invites visitors to explore the surrounding wilderness on a guided walking safari, bringing them closer to nature than ever before.

Built on the belief that meaningful travel comes from returning to the basics, the Explorer Camp embodies the core philosophy of the reserve’s safaris - authentic connection with the natural world. Guests enjoy an eye-opening encounter with the African bush while learning about wildlife, tracking, and the ecosystem from experienced guides.

The camp operates from September to May and is discreetly fenced for safety, while still maintaining the spirit of true exploration. Comfortable safari tents are thoughtfully positioned close enough to foster a shared camp atmosphere yet far enough apart to preserve each guest’s privacy.

Perched on a scenic plateau among the only basalt and granite outcrops within the reserve, the camp’s location offers a striking and magical setting that enhances the sense of adventure and discovery.

Review

Why this Camp..?

(According to Google Reviews)

Reviews for Shamwari Explorer Camp consistently describe it as a top-tier "glamping" experience that prioritizes an authentic, back-to-basics connection with nature over the "glitzy" luxury of other Shamwari Game Reserve lodges. Guests frequently highlight the unique guided walking safaris and the high quality of food prepared over open fires.

Key Guest Highlights

  • The "Glamping" Experience: While simpler than other Shamwari lodges, the camp features "old colonial style" tents with comfortable beds, LED lighting, and private en-suite facilities including outdoor showers and flush toilets.

  • Expert Guiding: Reviewers rave about the rangers (notably Jason, Brad, and Josh), praising their deep knowledge of biodiversity, tracking skills, and ability to find the Big Five.

  • Dining: Despite the off-grid setting, the food is described as a "banquet" and "out of this world," with many guests impressed by the skill required to cook high-quality meals on open campfires.

  • Atmosphere: The camp is unfenced and set on a plateau with a viewing deck, offering an immersive experience where you might see wildlife passing directly through the camp.

Important Considerations from Reviews

  • Authenticity vs. Luxury: Multiple reviewers note that if you require high-end hotel amenities like Wi-Fi or air conditioning, this is not the place for you.

  • Physical Activity: The experience is centered around two to three-day walking trails. While game drives are included, the focus is on trekking on foot to track animals like lion prides and rhinos.
