Hoanib Elephant Camp

The brand new Hoanib Elephant Camp opened in May 2026 and offers a rare opportunity to experience the rugged wilderness of Namibia’s Kaokoland, where desert-adapted elephants roam ancient river valleys beneath dramatic mountains and endless skies.

Set within this remote landscape, the solar-powered camp features ten spacious guest tents, including two family units, designed to combine comfort with minimal environmental impact. Raised on low wooden decks, the tents feature rammed earth walls, insulated canvas roofs, air-conditioning, indoor and outdoor showers, private plunge pools and sweeping views of the desert.

The main lodge provides a relaxed open-plan lounge and dining area, with an outdoor deck, swimming pool and firepit overlooking the surrounding wilderness. A small wellness spa offers a peaceful retreat after days spent exploring.

Wildlife is the focus, with guided drives in search of desert-adapted elephants, giraffe, oryx, zebra, springbok and kudu, as well as rarer species including klipspringer, steenbok, brown hyena and, with luck, desert-adapted lions and black rhino. Guests can also visit a local Himba community or venture further afield on excursions towards the Skeleton Coast.

The surrounding desert may appear stark, but its wildlife and landscapes are remarkably rich. Seasonal waterholes attract animals at dusk, while birdlife includes Verreaux’s eagle, Monteiro’s hornbill and Rüppell’s korhaan.
